Welcome to Drawing!
Contour (outline) line drawing - (!NO SHADING!), simply the outlines of objects/subject matter. We'll start with objects like hands and shoes and translate to shaded drawings of reflective objects for this unit.
Students will choose a subject matter of their own choice, but the subject matter they choose must be dimensional and focus on texture. Whether students choose to do a drawing with pencil, charcoal, in color with prismacolor or sharpies, a strong emphasis on creating textures will be required. We'll practice creating some textures on the first day of this assignment and they students will create their choice final drawings.
We'll review facial proportions from General Art and apply few new rules, then we'll create a translation - a self portrait in pencil that is then turned into an ink drawing using words, phrases, and other literary possibilities (poems, quotes, lyrics) to define the subject and create tonal values.
Proportions - aka how to draw people correctly!
Students will create a collage with elements collaged in (paper images cut out & applied to the surface of the paper) and other elements drawn in. The goal is to create a cohesive and uniformly themed collage; with secondary goals of matching texures and values to 'hide' collaged images.
This week we'll use our imaginations as well as real life areas and objects around the art room for reference. Students may use some reference material, (ie pics) but this should be mostly done out of your head! The idea is to start from reference and work from that; creating and incorporating changes along the way. This is supposed to be challenging but FUN!
Grid drawings allow artists to create a very close copy of a reference and allows for a change in size; usually to 'blow up' the picture to a larger size. The grid allows for a higher level of accuracy because individual boxes can be checked to make sure the contours of all subject matters in the picture 'match up.'
Pointillism is a drawing or painting made up exclusively of small dots. We'll work with oil pastels to create a quick but beautiful and highly colorful work of art.
Students will create a work of art using chalk pastels within a set of choices. We'll study an artist, an art genre, etc., and use images or subjects of individual choice to create a unique and expressive work of art.
Students will create an interpretation of an object or subject matter out of #2 pencils. This assignment is fun and creative, and challenges students imaginations.
These weeks will be for a final drawing and for our final exam.
Most of the time will be spent creating a final exam drawing (worth the same as one project) that exemplifies what each student has learned over the trimester and should be their best work to date. Students choose the subject matter, their medium, size, etc. The idea is that students can showcase their best work for this assignment.
We have a comprehensive final exam on drawing terms and techniques. Study guide is our sketchbooks and notes taken througout the trimester.
