    Welcome to Painting at MPHS!

  • Week 1

This week we'll be creating our sketchbooks; collecting pictures for reference for use thoughout the trimester & adding those to our sketchbooks. We'll start with acrylic paint and create a transformed object. We'll practice some simple ways to create textures and faux painted textures. We'll then apply what we learned to apply to an object of the students choice. The project will be very individual and might range from a shoe box to a shoe to glass vase!

  • Weeks 2 & 3

Banners for Art Reach of Mid-Michigan

In the first couple of weeks we'll get oriented to the class and start our banners for display in downtown and other areas of Mt. Pleasant.

Be prepared to see your banners hanging all around town and adding color and art aesthetic from Spring through Fall.

    Festival of Banners

The theme changes from year to year so be sure to double check the current theme though the link below.

  • Weeks 4 & 5 - Altered Books

In our altered books we'll use both acrylic and watercolor paints as well as alternative painting materials (coffee, tea) to create books filled with various techniques that explore one cohesive theme. This assignment can be worked back into throughout the whole tri.

  • Week 6 - Watercolor unit

    wc

Students will start with a watercolor still life and then complete a final watercolor drawing of their choice. Watercolor techniques will be explored and must be present in both the still life and the final watercolor painting.

  • Week 7 - Guoache

    g

Guoache is an opaque watercolor. So it's waterbased and essentially works the same way as watercolor, but it is not meant to be transparent. All the same techniues that apply to watercolor apply to guoache, and it can also be used to bridge the gap between watercolor and acrylic. Students will create a landscape using Guoache from their own photograph.

  • Weeks 8 & 9 - Oil Painting

    oil

Students will learn how to paint using oil paints. A variety of tecniques and color schemes will be explored. Students will create a portrait of their choice of subject matter; in this project students will learn to mix and blend colors, judge color schemes and ratios of paint and apply that knowledge to adding shadows to create dimension and depth. They will also learn proper clean up and safety as well as mix ins for oil paints.

  • Weeks 10-12

    P

These weeks will be used to add to or re-do any work from the past trimester, but primarily to work on final exam art work. Students will choose the paint medium they most prefer and create one work or a series of works (for quicker mediums like watercolor and guoache) that exemplifies what they learned in the class. This could be thought of as a portfolio peice and should be the students best work.
