English 12 A & B are required for graduation. The focus of the course is leadership and the different ways that leadership affects the community and citizenship.

Goals:

  • Complete with understanding and relevance all required novels and supplemental readings. 
  • Develop critical reading, listening and viewing strategies
  • Develop and use the tools and practices of inquiry and research - generating, exploring, and refining important questions; creating a hypothesis or thesis; gathering and studying evidence; drawing conclusions; and composing a report.
  • Increase vocabulary (verbal and written)
  • Understand and practice writing as a recursive process
  • Prepare/present spoken multimedia presentations

  • Orwell, George. 1984

Objectives:  To learn and be able to demonstrate the following standards/concepts:

Unit 1 - "The Power of Story: Inspiring passion, purpose and leadership potential”

·folklore, Postcolonial literature, frame story, characterization, theme, point of view, imagery, figurative language, diction, proverbs

·Digital Story - create a digital story based on your story. How does your understanding of the role of story influence the function of leadership?

Unit 2 - "Shared Leadership: The responsibility of the electorate”

·political commentary, symbolism, foreshadowing, motifs, satire, propaganda, anonymous narration

·"This I Believe” Essay
